Insurance By Farmers, For Farmers - Captive Insurers Have Protected Agricultural Businesses For Decades

Agricultural enterprises have utilized captive insurers for decades. As with commercial carriers and federal insurance programs, they can insure against crop losses, including some losses that are excluded by commercial or federal programs. Crop farmers face significant risks of loss due to weather events, acts of God, disease, pests, and any number of exposures. Most production sites have production yields that vary year to year, sometimes significantly due to the aforementioned risks. Additional loss points include damage to major equipment and environmental contamination. Agricultural operations, either as individual owners or through a group captive collectively owned by similarly-situated farmers, could establish a captive to insure all of their risks. Incorporating a captive into one’s business and risk mitigation plans could be the difference between a farm staying in business or going under. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently published this 2025 webinar to educate farmers about the benefits of captives. https://cap.unl.edu/captive-insurance-farmers-and-ranchers-strategically-preparing-unexpected-jan-17-2025-webinar/
