University of Kentucky To Add Insurance Curriculum Thanks To Initiative By ACM's General Counsel

Alliance Captive Management proudly announces that through efforts initiated by its General Counsel, Amanda Luby, the University of Kentucky – Amanda’s law school alma mater and Kentucky’s flagship university – will be launching a junior/senior level course on Insurance in the Spring of 2026.  The course will be taught through the UK Gatton School of Business and Economics and will provide students with a deep understanding of the top 10-15 common types of insurance policies and their exclusions, including commercial property/casualty lines, personal lines, employee benefits, life/health, and captives. Motivated by US Bureau of Labor statistics published in trade journals showing that the insurance industry faces a massive professional cliff over the next 5-10 years as more than 400,000 professionals retire from its forces, Amanda first contacted the Business School’s dean in early January 2025 to assess whether the University would have any interest in developing such a course. It most certainly does as shown by the school’s rapid mobilization.

After Amanda organized a brainstorming session with various industry professionals within Kentucky, including with essential help from Tim Feld, General Counsel to Kentucky Employer Mutual Insurance Co., the round table presented a proposed curriculum to the University which quickly mobilized its associate deans to find a slot for this fundamental course. Shortly after being presented with this proposed curriculum, the head of UK’s Finance Department, Chris Clifford, identified an adjunct professor to teach the course who will be working with industry professionals to flesh out the materials. Kentucky’s insurance industry rallied to make this happen. Managers within the insurance industry throughout the US would be well-served to consider hiring UK’s Gatton Business School graduates for summer internships and to fill open positions next Spring. More details about the course will be released by UK in the early Fall.
